New and exciting roles for pharmacists are being developed at pace as the NHS struggles to cope with the demands placed on its services by a growing and aging population.

There has been an increase of roles for pharmacists in GP practices and within NHS organisations such as clinical commissioning groups and health boards.

To reflect this change in the market and the increasing number of our members with portfolio careers, the BPA and Bluefin Professions have worked together to design an insurance solution that meet the needs of members working in pharmacy outside of Boots employment.

What does it cover?

With a £5 million Limit of Indemnity as standard, this policy covers the pharmacist for financial loss (Professional Indemnity) and/or bodily injury (Medical Malpractice) caused by a negligent act whilst in the conduct of their business. It also covers them for bodily injury caused by an accident (Public Liability) in connection with the insured’s business.

Example claim scenarios include:

  • A dispensing error which causes harm to a patient whilst working as a locum.
  • Harm resulting from the provision of vaccination services whilst working as a locum.
  • Incorrect advice given to a patient whilst working as a locum.
  • A prescribing error whilst working as an independent prescriber.
  • Incorrect advice or medication change whilst providing medicines management services in a GP practice.

As front line medical professionals, pharmacists are very often the first port of call before a patient goes to the Doctor. We understand that pharmacists' activities can include giving vaccinations for flu and cervical cancer, providing advice on how to stop smoking, as well as conducting asthma checks, to name just a few.

This policy also covers:

  • General Pharmaceutical Council Investigation Costs.
  • Inquest costs.
  • Libel and Slander.
  • Loss of Documents.
  • 12 month automatic run-off cover in the event of death, retirement, paternity/maternity, permanent incapacity of the policyholder.

Premiums start from just £80*, up to £750* depending on the type and complexity of the services provided by the pharmacist concerned.

*Excluding Insurance Premium Tax.
